The Inter-Medical Faculty Physiology Quiz
The Professor Carlo Fonseka Challenge Trophy
The Physiological Society of Sri Lanka organizes an annual Inter Medical Faculty Physiology Quiz to promote Physiology teaching and learning in the Medical Faculties. Student teams from all Medical Faculties in Sri Lanka have participated in this annual quiz since it’s inception in 2013. The inaugural quiz was held at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayawardenepura and since then it is hosted by all the Medical Faculties in rotation. The trophy awarded for the winning team has been named the Professor Carlo Fonseka Challenge Trophy in honour of Emeritus Professor Carlo Fonseka, an eminent professor of Physiology of Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, a founder member and past president of the PSSL and a great teacher of Physiology.
Professor Cheng Hwee Ming, Professor of Physiology of the University of Malaya in Malaysia was the main catalyst for setting up this quiz with the support of the PSSL and he consented to be the first quiz master for the inaugural quiz bringing his own quiz question bank. He is the creator and organizer of the world famous Inter Medical School Physiology Quiz (IMSPQ) held by the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia each year. Student teams from Sri Lankan medical faculties also participate in this international quiz annually usually after participation in our Inter Medical Faculty Physiology Quiz. In 2017 the Colombo Medical Faculty team won the gold medal at the IMSPQ international quiz, while Sri Jayawardenepua Faculty team was ranked 3rd and Kelaniya Medical Faculty team was ranked 5th among the international participants.
The Inter Medical Faculty Physiology Quiz is a wonderful opportunity for students from all medical faculties to socialize and interact with their peers from all over the country and gives them an opportunity to visit the other medical faculties annually. The quiz gives the opportunity for the participating teams to improve their quiz skills before participating in the international Inter Medical School Physiology Quiz (IMSPQ) held in Malaysia. The quiz also gives an opportunity for the academic staff accompanying the students to exchange ideas on teaching and research in Physiology.
